Daiso has reached Penang’s shore

After years of wishing and hoping, Daiso finally opened its first store here on this little island. The store is located on the 2nd floor just opposite Maybank in Queensbay Mall, so you won’t miss it for sure. Though the store front is not big but in terms of sq ft, it is certainly big… probably bigger than the one in The Curve, KL. It is managed by Aeon or famously known as Jusco. Jusco is also the anchor tenant of Queensbay Mall. The only thing is, you can’t use your J-card when you shop in Daiso! šŸ˜›

.

.

How can a bento gadget queen like myself is not there to witness the opening???? Too bad, wrong timing! They opened their doors yesterday but I can’t go since my car was in the workshop… Anyhow, I did not miss out on anything. I went there this morning and to my biggest disappointment, they don’t even sell a single packet of picks! Don’t talk about those gadgets to cut cheese or hams. All they have are some silicon cups, cookie cutters and molds. NO PICKS! Can you believe that????

.

.

The store was crowded since it is near the Lunar New Year period. Lots of shoppers going for last minute shopping at the mall. Also, there were a lot of outstation shoppers who came to Penang to celebrate Chinese New Year.

What they have in the store are mainly for home/kitchen use. Even the food section is bigger than the bento section! šŸ˜ Oh well! Lucky thing we still have 100Yen to fill in those void! šŸ˜›

Anyhoo, they have those big piece of felts selling at RM5 which are what I have been eying… my next hobby! hehheehe

So, it was not that bad after all… at least we have more choices now…

Bento Fun #237 – Happy Bunny New Year!

Initially I have no intention to make any bento since Darrius has party in his school. Then while I was preparing lunch, I thought I should start on my bunny project… since everyone are at it now! šŸ˜€

So, here is my first real bunny bento for the year…

.

.

I just made a simple bunny onigiri with some goodies we had for lunch today. I colored the rice for the ears but guessed they were not strong enough so color was not really showing… will color darker the next time. There are some teriyaki skewers at the back with lots of broiled broccoli, stawberries, cherry tomatoes and carrot. I have some steamed minced pork too but guess they were too messy to be put in the box so decided not to use them at the end.

.

.

Folded some origami bunnies for decoration last night and thought they are nice as deco for the bento too! šŸ˜€

And here is Darrius wishing everyone…

.

.

He made that piece of art in school… guess what he drew in that lantern? LONDON BRIDGE!!!! I asked him what has London Bridge got to do with Chinese New Year???? He said, teacher said can draw anything!!! His latest obsession is London Bridge… which reminded me that I still owe him a London Bridge bento! šŸ˜›

Here wishing everyone who celebrate the Lunar New Year a Happy and a Prosperous year with good health and lots of joy with family and friends!

Bento Fun #236 – Happy Flower Sisters

Good morning all!

Today is the last day I am packing bento for the week as tomorrow Darrius’sĀ  kindy will be having a pre Chinese New Year party where all the students will bring some Chinese New Year goodies to be shared with their friends and teachers. For that, I have finally warmed up my oven yesterday by baking some goodies for Darrius to bring to school tomorrow. I even bought some pineapples and see if I get the time to make some pineapple tarts too! šŸ˜›

Baby G managed to dig out a pack of my cutters set and was playing with them. Since I saw them lying around the table this morning, I decided to use one of them… one of my favorite flower cutter…

.

.

Made 2 triple deck dual cheeses & berry jam sammies with cutout on the top slice where I put some facial details to make them look cuter. šŸ˜› Stuck 2 small pieces of green and yellow lunch sheets to create cuter effects… Used black sesame seeds for the eyes and orange lunch sheet for the cheeks. Forgot to thaw my pink kamaboko ^o^ I think my baby would’ve love to have these when she is older!!! There are some Mandarin orange wedges, strawberries and cherry tomatoes to fill up the box.

The last time I made something similar to this bento was this…

You can find these cutter set at J-Mama or Bento Craft.

That’s all for today and I hope you’ll have a great day ahead… and happy bento-ing too! šŸ˜€

Bento Fun #235 – OOgling-OOglies

The OOglies bento on Monday was a huge hit with Darrius! He loved every bits of them and has even finished the lettuce! He told me proudly that he finished the lettuce and his teacher said he is such a good boy to eat his vege! šŸ˜€ So, if you have problems getting your kids to eat their vege, packing a cute bento could be the next most practical ‘weapon’ you can use! šŸ˜†

Since I don’t have any ideas of what to pack for him this morning, I decided to do him another OOgling-OOglies bento with more characters.

.

.

Today’s casts include Mrs Mini Potato, The Mandarin Orange trio, The Meat Patty with cheese top couple, Ms Strawberries and Master Orange cherry tomato.

I’ve added this bento to WFLW Week 35 over at Shannon’s. Remember to add in yours too! šŸ˜€

Wishing you a great day ahead and happy bento-ing! šŸ˜€

Wiener or sausage heart – Tutorial

I have a friend who has just started packing bento for her son to bring to his kindy and she has no idea how to make the wiener or sausage heart which most bentoers do to fill up thier bento boxes.

This is a very simple step-by-step wiener or sausage heart tutorial.

Firstly, cut across the wiener diagonally making sure both sides are equal…

.

.

This is how you should arrange them…

.

.

Secure with a food pick…

.

.

Here are some of my past bento which has wiener hearts in them…

Hope the tutorial is helpful for those who has just started packing bento. Wieners hearts are good to use as fillers in bento so there will be no empty space where food will get shake around especially when you are packing for little kids. It is always good to make your bento as compact as possible to minimize any movements so all the food’s positions will be kept intact.

I will be posting more tutorials when I time permits so stay tuned yah! šŸ˜€
